Sikh Genocide 1984: SIT Likely To Re-investigate 186 Cases Out Of 241

NEW DELHI—The Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Union Home Minister’s Office is likely to re-probe 186 cases out of a total 241 cases of 1984’s Sikh genocide. Thousands of Sikhs were brutally killed by the State organized mobs across India following the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indra Gandhi. The mobs were given hassle free 72 hours to trace homes of Sikhs in Delhi and then kill them alive.
Media reports reveal that the 186 cases to be re-opened belong to states like Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh. SIT would have to get permission from the respective courts to re-open the cases again.
Earlier, the SIT was appointed in February 2015 on the recommendation of the committee spearheaded by the former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, Justice GP Mathur. The SIT was made to file reports on the cases within six months, but later its validity was extended for one year without any reason.
Recently, the Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, questioned the Union government of India about the inefficiency of courts following which the SIT became active in wake of the upcoming assembly elections of 2017 in Punjab.
