New Delhi, Nov 16: For the first time in 15 years, the Delhi Metro has decided to put a restriction on the baggage size that one carries. Now you can carry only those bags that have a width 45 centimetre and height of 25 centimetre. Bags that have width and height more than mentioned, will not be allowed inside the Delhi Metro.
The new decision by the Delhi Metro to cut the baggage size might not be appreciated and invited by the people who travel regularly to the airports and stations. Of the 28 lakh passengers who travel daily by the Delhi Metro, 40,000 use the airport line daily and the regular metro before that. Now the new ruling might create problems for those commuters who frequent airports.
"Steel barriers have been installed at five stations, namely Shahdara, Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar, Chandni Chowk and Barakhamba to see passenger response. By putting up the steel barriers, we are able to screen the baggage more efficiently. Previously, passengers would pile bags on one another, creating a hassle for us," a CISF officer was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
A DMRC spokesperson mentioned that the baggage scanners "with the designated steel barriers are placed at the listed metro stations" which has been done so that baggage with the size of 60 x 45x 25 cms can pass through. "On many occasions, people carry huge oversized baggage. This causes damage, not only to the scanners but also is the reason for the inconvenience to other passengers. Travellers inside the Metro train also suffers a lot from big bags," he added.
Recently, The Delhi Metro had raised the fares of travelling. The revised fares for travelling up to 2 kilometres was set at Rs 10; 2 to 5 kilometres Rs 20; 5 to 12 kilometres Rs 30; 12 to 21 kilometres Rs 40; 21 to 32 kilometres Rs 50 and for the distance beyond 32 kilometres Rs 60.
