Govt announces Rs 5 lakh to kin of each 1984 riot victim
The announcement comes just a day after Human Rights Watch had criticized India for failing to bring to justice those responsible for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and said this demonstrated India's lack of resolve to fight communal violence.
NEW DELHI: The Narendra Modi government at the Centre on Thursday announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for each of the 3,325 persons massacred in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi in the wake of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.
The announcement comes just a day after Human Rights Watch had criticized India for failing to bring to justice those responsible for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and said this demonstrated India's lack of resolve to fight communal violence.
In a statement, HRW had said: 'Successive Indian governments' failure to prosecute those responsible for 1984's anti-Sikh killings and other abuses during the 1984 anti-Sikh violence highlights India's weak efforts to combat communal violence.'
