3.     Eminent journalist Arun Shourie, who was in the city for a lecture on ‘The current scenario in media and the challenges’ at Chandigarh Press Club, on Sunday said the BJP would be a threat to journalists if it came to power in 2019 again.
4.     He said Indira Gandhi was remorseful for imposing censorship on media during the Emergency, adding that if the BJP came to power in 2019, the situation would become even worse for correspondents. “There are a very few months left for our freedom and we must use it to make an alliance with hackers for obtaining information,” he said.
5.     On being asked what took him so long to detach from the BJP now and not during the time of Gujarat riots and Babri Masjid demolition, he replied, “I was in BJP because of Vajpayee. He wanted to remove Modi but then the party would have split.”
6.     Shourie, while giving an example of Rafale deal, said, “No one writes against reservation which has also been extended to promotions. Our press conference on Rafale was given little space, but the next day, rebuttals by ministers were elaborately published.”
7.     He said their job was to examine the facts and not make news space available to these ministers. The issues relating to life and death were being overlooked. There would be a time when these issues would swell and burst.”
8.     “Media houses want to expand business and political parties are maintaining a separate budget for media. Also, our Prime Minister is an event manager and media houses are becoming propagandist.”
9.     “The editors think that readers don’t want to get into details but the devil is in details only. The issues are so complex that it needs to be reported in fine points. And even if readers don’t want details, we should present them in a way that they indulge in it.”
10. He said if the journalists were doing half the job, they were giving the signal that things were normal. The focus should remain on the issues of public importance.
11. Emphasising the role of RTI in journalism, he said as many as 62 persons were killed for digging information through RTI and nobody had the audacity to question this.
12. “Don’t go so close to people you want to write about. We often think that we are cultivating our source.
But in fact, they are cultivating us to plant stories in a certain manner,” he added.
