Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the mystery-man of India at last got 20 years imprisonment for raping two of his disciples.
He is known as the ostentatious leader of the Dera Sacha Sauda religious sect.
Before the commencement of the court-proceedings a few days back, the situation in the northern town of Panchkula sparked a lot of unrest leaving at least35 people dead.
Thousands of army, police and paramilitary units have been deployed and there are chances of spreading violence throughout India.
According to the Hindustan Times the case registered against Gurmeet is not a new and fresh one; the matter was brought to the knowledge of the legal authorities through a three-page anonymous letter written in 2002 by a female devotee.
But Gurmeet Singh and his followers have flatly rejected all allegations.
Aditaya Insan, the sect’s spokesman said talking to the Indian channel NDTV, “For the last 15 years there has been a subterranean string of conspiracy of various forces.
There are people at work that instigate us, there’s a drug Mafia at work, there is a political Mafia at work, to create these problems at the Dera.”
He said that it is simply a greater conspiracy to bring them down.
Gurmeet Singh has more than 50 million followers and is considered one of the most politically influential personalities of India. He enjoys a Z+ security cover which is only reserved for high-risk individuals such as cabinet ministers and Supreme Court judges and only 36 people in India are under that level of security cover provided by the government.
Gurmeet enjoys such a very strong political position in India that politicians call on his sect in search for his “blessings” during elections.
Gurmeet Singh is a man with a very mysterious character. He was born in August 1967 at Sri Gurusar Modia village in Ganganager district of Rajasthan. At the age of 7, he was initiated into the Dera Sacha Sauda sect by his predecessor Shah Satnam Singh. On 23 September 1990, Shah Satnam publicly conferred sainthood and succession of the spiritual leadership upon Gurmeet Ram Rahim. He had been a music producer, actor and director in the beginning phase of his life.
The Indian Express placed him 96th in their list of the 100 most powerful Indians of 2015.
But the most dominating introduction to his personality is that he has a large number of followers among Dalits and Other Backward Classes. Political analysts are of the opinion that Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has become a strong voice of the crushed ones in India particularly of the Dalits and other low-caste Hindus and he may prove a threat to the extremist-Hindus in the coming days.

3. It is the politicians’ job to keep trying to sell us fake ideas and flawed solutions. That is politics as usual — immoral and self-centered. Winning the next round of election has become the most dominant preoccupation — to the exclusion of any other ethical considerations. A leader gets serenaded as “Chanakya” if he wins, by hook or crook, an election for his party.
4. Clever people are busy planning and planting stories about the perfidies of the baba and the all goings-on in the dera. We are being titillated with juicy details about the baba’s living style, his henchmen’s modus vivendi — as if the politicians who frequented that dera all these years did not know. The dera and its followers are being shown as utterly gullible people following a fallen guru. This is supposed to be a new discovery. And, no one is talking of police incompetence (or collusion) as to how this or that key functionary managed to escape the security forces’ dragnet. *******
5. We are repeatedly told that we now live in a “new India” which devised its own “new normal” ways of right and wrong, success and failure, moral and immoral. Old yardsticks of knowledge, old ideas of progress, and old practitioners of ideas and thoughts are officially junked -- like the old currency. Slogans and jumlas have replaced mathematical theorems and scientific formulas.
6. In the old India, economics was deemed to be a science, even if an inexact science, and economists were respected for their domain knowledge, their capacity to see a link between internal economic activities and global forces; in the new India, Harvard economists are mocked, while simple, straightforward political statements are insisted upon as the gospel truth.
7. In the last few days, we have come to reap the bitter harvest of this kind of new knowledge of the new rulers of the new India. We now know — based on the Reserve Bank of India figures — that the whole exercise of demonetisation was a grand waste of time and national energies; we also know, as per the government’s own figures, that economic growth has slowed down rather alarmingly. Suddenly, a seemingly sturdy economy is looking somewhat precarious.
8. Yet we are told blandly that demonetisation has nothing to do with the economic slowdown. In the last few days, central ministers have used their social media handles to repeat, parrot-like, that notebandi was indeed a grand success.
9. It is in this context of official sleight of hand that I recommend Kaushik Basu’s new book, An Economist in the Real World, the art of policymaking in India. Basu has given an account of his tenure as the chief economic adviser during the UPA regime. It gives a glimpse of the complicated connections operating in our national economy.
10. But what is more refreshing is that Basu has a totally un-pompous tone; at one stage, he even quotes, self-deprecatingly, his maid that she thought he was the person “in charge of rising prices in India.”
11. However, for my money, the juiciest insight appears in the last chapter. Read this: “Policymakers at the helm of a nation need to know a lot but, even more importantly, they need to know what they do not know. The biggest policy blunders in history, such as China’s Great Leap Forward in 1958, which unleashed the most severe famine in recorded human history, or the ill-conceived reparations policy that led to the German hyperinflation of 1923, occurred because leaders over-estimated their knowledge and ability. The reason why knowing one’s limitations is critical is that for any national economy, even the smallest ones, what the leader knows and can directly do will be severely limited.”
12. This ought to be put down as plain blasphemy in the new India.
13. And then, there is Kaushik Basu warning, in conclusion, that “the nationalisms of the day must make way for a global agenda that all peoples, irrespective of their narrow identities, can shape and cherish.”
14. This, Professor Basu, could attract for you a charge of being anti-national in the new India”.
