PMO, Rajnath Singh seek to quell BJP rift rumours
The PMO statement came in the wake of a report that Rajnath Singh was unhappy over rumours being spread by “a ministerial colleague” and “party rival” about his son being pulled up by Narendra Modi over some alleged misconduct. Photo: Ramesh Pathania/Mint
" ....But do you ever ask your sons these questions? After all, those who rape are also someone's son....." Modi said
“As to how Modi was keeping a close watch on his own colleagues in the party and the government? As to why then it is surely a bad sign for the Modi government?”
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing his first Independence Day speech from the Red Fort,’ said,
“……I am an outsider to Delhi. But an outsider came to Delhi and got an insider view in the last two months.• For Delhi's elite class, I was like an untouchable.
………
• When we hear about incidents of rape, our heads hang in shame. • I want to ask every mother and father, you ask your daughters 'where are you going, who are you going with'. But do you ever ask your sons these questions? After all, those who rape are also someone's son.
• We have to rise above mera kya - mujhe kya (what am I getting out of this); some things have to be done for the greater national good……..”
In view of the extract from the speech above and from the rumours as under:
As to how Modi was keeping a close watch on his own colleagues in the party and the government, if the rumours are true, as to why then it is surely a bad sign for the Modi government?
“The rumour that his son Pankaj worked as conduit for transfer of a middle level police officer has hit Rajnath where it could hurt him most – questioning his integrity, tarnishing his image and putting his son's budding political career in jeopardy.
Coupled with that was the story how the home minister's role had effectively been curtailed in the ACC (Appointment Committee of the Cabinet)………...”
………….
There are certain suggestions from a section of BJP leaders that the rumours, its origin and spread was result of in-house rivalry. Again there is very little to support these charges and counter charges of infighting at the top, but if that is the case it is surely a bad sign for the Modi government.
It was also the latest in the series of other rumours that have been in vogue in the power corridors of the national capital as to how Modi was keeping a close watch on his own colleagues in the party and the government. The grapevine was that a trap was laid for Pankaj by someone at the top who suspected him of such wrongdoings and he walked straight into that. Thus it was said that PM’s one-to-one chat with him, not just left him rattled but diminished his father’s moral and actual authority within the government and Sangh Parivar

New Delhi, Aug 27 (PTI) Opposition Congress today sought to embarrass the government over the controversy triggered by media reports about some "alleged misconduct" by Home Minister Rajnath Singh's son, asking what the allegations were.
While BJP attempted damage control saying there were only rumours which have been nailed, the Home Minister found support in leaders from several rival parties like JD(U), NCP and SP.

Political analysts believe there is a strong rift between senior ministers of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and younger leaders which has come out in the open.
