to the glorious principle that "all men are created equal".
Since Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India is scheduled to address a joint session of the Congress on June 08, please have your congressman to raise the issue with your congressman of dilapidating conditions of
religious freedom for Christian, Muslim and Sikh communities in India.
With the coming to power of Narendra Modi, already marginalized Sikh community is experiencing a sharp increase in all forms of state oppression. The recent events of state violence against Sikhs point at the
historical pattern of oppression which draws on the inherent flaws deeply entrenched in the Indian legal and constitutional framework against the community.
Explanation II to Article 25(b) of the Constitution of India has labeled Sikhs as Hindus because of which Sikh community is being treated as Hindus under family law and personal laws in India.
Numbering barely 2% of the population of India, the Sikh community has been at the receiving end of state ruthlessness for the past several decades,
whenever it raised voice for political rights, separate religious identity and right to self determination. In India, Sikhs have been subjected to“Genocide" with impunity, starting from:
- June 1984, Military action against Golden Temple;
- November 1984, Organized killing of over 30,000 Sikhs; and
- 1984-98, Extra-judicial killing of over 100,000 Sikhs.
Promoting and protecting International Religious Freedom has been a corner stone of American Foreign Policy which is also reflected in the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998.
Please urge your Congressman to raise the following issues with PM Modi during his upcoming visit:
a)       Sikhs being labeled as Hindus under Indian Constitution; and
b)       Sikhs' right to self determination.
Besides raising these issues with PM Modi, Also request them to issue a statement concerning  deteriorating condition of religious freedom for Christians, Muslims and Sikhs in India.
