NEW DELHI: 'An Insignificant Man', a documentary that chronicles the rise of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, debuts at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday, and Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor "highly recommends" what she calls "an awesome film".
In the documentary, filmmakers Khushboo Ranka and Vinay Shukla follow Kejriwal, whom they call "the Bernie Sanders of India". The film's synopsis, on the Toronto Film Festival's web site, says Kejriwal shook up the "complacent and corrupt status quo of Indian politics as the head of the Common Man's Party."
'An Insignificant Man' is directed by Ranka who co-wrote 'Ship of Theseus' and by Shukla who featured in it. The film is produced by Anand Gandhi, who directed the National Award winning Ship of Theseus.
According to Gandhi, the idea for the 95-minute film, distilled from 400 hours of real behind-the-scenes footage, originated from "filtered" news about the `India Against Corruption' movement of some years ago. The film was shot over the course of a year. It was financed by India's biggest crowd-funding campaign for a film and was supported by nearly 800 people.
"Khushboo and Vinay were keen on understanding the inner workings of the party offices so they picked up their cameras, along with a few assistants, and moved to Delhi to follow its key members, Kejriwal and Yogendra Yadav," Gandhi said last month.
