A currency battle ahead
Highlighting As Under:
1. As the winter session of Parliament begins on Wednesday a debate on
demonetisation will inevitably be high on priority.
2. With Mamata Banerjee’s initiative, opposition parties may put up a
united fight, now that the BJP intends to smear them as apologists for
black money hoarders and to paint itself as a crusader against corruption.
3. The Opposition fire power relies on public discontent at the sudden
currency withdrawal and lack of preparedness.
4. Opposition leaders will ill-serve their own cause, or the cause of
the nation, if they are content to make familiar noises about discomfort to
people and poor implementation of the otherwise welcome measure, nor should
the Opposition repeat without evidence the allegation that the BJP and its
corporate friends took care of their money since they had advance knowledge
of the impending demonetisation.
5. The BJP, on the other hand, pretends to be upbeat about public
support — despite inconvenience — to the Prime Minister’s high-risk action.
6. A confident Modi has asked people to bear the pain for 50 days
before passing a verdict. He has addressed public rallies in Karnataka, Goa
and Uttar Pradesh to mobilise support for the step that has shaken India as
never before.
7. By calling it a crackdown on corruption and black money, the Prime
Minister is aggressively courting the poor — a constituency that usually
supports the Congress and regional parties — even at the cost of alienating
the BJP’s traditional vote bank of the middle class and traders.
8. It is time Parliament looked beyond politics of protests,
disruptions and walkouts.
9. Neutralising the parallel economy that runs on black money is a
national challenge and the country expects a cool, informed debate.
10. The government’s is a limited fight against black money kept in cash.
11. Its track record on curbing unaccounted wealth held in assets and other non-currency forms, at home and abroad, is nothing to write home about.
12. It is also time politicians stopped their double talk on black money — preaching about its baneful consequences and urging an end to the menace while refusing to make political funding transparent and clean up the electoral politics.
