We (SIKHS) are not idol worshipers 
It is Very Much True that " We (SIKHS) are not idol worshipers but in modern era every nation promote their Heroes"   However,its more appropriate to  follow in the footsteps of our Heroes rather than erecting their Stone images only.WE WILL NOT THINK OF ERECTING THE IMAGES OF OUR GURU SAHIBS. It is regrettable that many of those who call them Sikh are copying Hindutva to display and even worship Imaginary pictures of our Guru Sahibs. Such foolish practises take us away from The REALITY into Fake ritualism.
The word "STATUE" about year 1375 means Image. Many of us are prone to copy the western practises without much thought.
The Word "IDOL" about year 1250. It is interesting to note the difference in spelling of idol in Middle English as in idele and idolatry ( worship of idols ) as ydolatrie, although both words are first recorded in an edition of The story of Genesis and Exodus about 1250.
Some misguided Sikhs in collaboration with some Hindus tried to get Heritage monument Status Darbar Sahib Amritsar from The UNO. They do not understand the implications of such a status, but in copy cat craze they tried to go in the wrong direction away from the Teachings of Gurbani.
Establishing Statues, sculptures etc is a Futile exercise copied from others. GURU SAHIB JI EXPLICITLY TOLD US " BUT POOJ POOJ HINDU MOOAI TIRUK MOOAI SIR NAEE.... TERI GAT DUHU NA PAEE".
One must understand that all these statues are FRAGILE and will wither away eventually. More over some are liable to be Desecrated by Foolish Racists, and there is no dearth of such people in this world. I remember some of us established a memorial  plaque in Stanley Park Vancouver to commemorate the tragedy of KAMAGATA MARU of 1914. Some racists fools were found to be pissing on the memorial after a few months. No one sit beside a monument or statue to keep watch. Even if we can install a camera to record 24 hours, but camera is not going to prevent desecration.
The only way to Instill respect for for our Heroes is to educate public about their Struggles and Dedication to preserve Human Dignity. In a country like India where TORTURE OF HUMAN BEING prevails in police stations committing EVIL CRIME OF TORTURE AGAINST HUMAN DIGNITY, AND WHERE DEATH PENALTY IS THE LAW OF ITS GOVERNMENT AND FOOLISH MAJORITY and THE BASIC RIGHTS OF PEOPLE ARE TRAMPLED ROUTINELY,The FAKE RESPECT FOR HEROES IS MEANINGLESS.
