A River is a larger stream of water flowing over land sometimes extended to a straight or inlet. In French language its called FLEUVE , however, old word "Riviere used to mean Necklace of precious stones or its famine for "Stream".
ALL Rivers (Not certain specific ones) are living entities and can be classed as people ( To be respected but not for Worshiping .  If they are allowed to serve Humanity and the Environment in Truthful manners and not FANATIC RITUALS TO TURN PEOPLE HYPOCRITICALLY IGNORANT ABOUT THE TRUTH.If Certain one or two rivers are declared sacred ARE OTHER RIVERS ANY LESS SACRED ?
In Jap ji Sahib " Gavai Tudno Paunnu Pannee, Baisantatu Gavai raja dharm duarai" (Page 6-6 ; 6-16 & 347-5 M:1); Further on page 7-15 & 504-1,M:1 says, "Kaitai Pavann Pannee Vaisantar Kaitai Kaan Mahes".Also " Kaee Kot Pavann Pannee Baisantar 275-16 M:5) We also read Pavann Guru Pannee Pita Mata Dhart Mahat"(8-10,1021-2 M:1);  Pehla Pannee Jeeo Hai Jitu Hariya Sabh Koai 464-8 M:1(fitstly there is life in water by which all become alive (green). The Creator has Created air & water from Nothingnes - "SUNN" . This was Second Creation of Nature before His own Self-Existent Formless Unity.
The Hindus are talking about the sacredness of a highly polluted River, when they have to respect for Human Dignity as they committed many more Crimes against human Dignity than the combined Crimes committed by Muslim and British ruler against Human Dignity on the Indian Subcontinent.
Kalar Beejs Durmat Aisi Nigurai Ki Nisani II Satgur Bajhu Ghor Andhara Dub Muaie bin Pannee" Page 1275 M:1 ( Such is the Sign of a Guru less evil person who sows the seed in Saline Land ! Without the True Guru, there is an appalling Darkness where one is Drowned to death, even in the absence of any Water).
