Sardar Kulmohan Singh Ji, I agree with your assertion that,"History always needs evidence"  And evidence is all there beyond any doubt. Books and photographs are all there.
As far as ,"we do something as per maryada". I have listed many cases of Sikhs that had been buried in a number of places around the world that were never in accordance with Sikh Maryada !
If we read SGGS JI that explain rituals after death, the "Sikh Maryada" becomes quite clear. Moreover there are many of our Sikh Brothers & Sisters who were killed by Indian & Punjab Police in which many cases where no Sikh Maryarda was followed, and not even any Sikh Ardas was recited at that time. I can quote many instances, but tortured body of Shaheed Jaswant Singh Khalra was never handed over to his wife, Children, or next of kins in Punjab.!!!!!!
  I do not say that Maryada is not necessary, and it all depends upon the Honesty and Decency of the Killers or those in charge.

This is not quite a useful  message that do not make much sense from a Sikh perspective. A Gursikh always acts in accordance with Gurbani - The Wisdom of Gurbani is the way to follow for all Sikhs  To myself the comments of Bhai Harbans Lal ji is quite reasonable. Here also The 'Samadh' is not for any kind of worship which is strictly prohibited by Guru Sahib telling "Only the Moorakh & Gavaar worship the  "MARRIAN"  memorial site.

On page 648 line 1 Guru Sahib wrote, " Ik Dajheh ik Dabeeaih Ikna Kutai Kaheh ........" I will write only the English translation here ( Some cremate, Some bury, and Some may be eaten by dogs .Some are thrown in water and Some are cast on to tower of Silence. ( to be eaten by birds), Nanak this much is not known as to where do they go and disappear. ) In the end " Jin Kai Potai Punn....." ( The Pious Gursikhs who have piety in their treasure, alone abides in the Guru ).
In Canada Sardar Bukan Singh (A world war I Sikh Canadian) was buried in Kitchener-Waterloo Cemetery, where many Canadian and Sikhs gather to place wreaths to honour his memory.
My good longtime friend Sardar Gurmit Singh Ji of Australia sent me photographs of Cemetery in Paupa New Guinea where many Sikh Martyrs of World Wars are buried. Similarly there are many cemeteries around the world where Sikh Martyr of World Wars are resting.
In Bagdad to pretest the US attack on Iraq, i requested some of the students from Ottawa University to take some photographs of the place where Guru Nanak Sahib sat when he visited. It was a Cemetery of Muslims where Guru Sahib Ji And Bhai Mardana Ji  sat. The students brought me the pictures from the inside of the place  To my surprise There was the pictures on of Raja Ram Chand,Krishana,Bhavani devi etc. Upon inquiry they were told that perhaps the ambassador of India to Iraq earlier may have installed those pictures on the inside walls.
When Infant Dalip Singh was detained by British they took him to England, changed his religion that is what proselytizing people do. They would not let him go back to Punjab,fearing mutiny there. British won because after the Maharaja passed away, the DOGRAS employed by him inside TURNED TRAITORS leading to the defeat by the treacherous British. Any decent ruler would at least  respect the last rites of Dalip Singh and bury his dead body instead of cremating. Even now many of the Christians choose Cremation rather than burial,because they do not believe the superstitions anymore.
It was so sad to note that thousands of Sikhs in Punjab were tortured to kill in jail cells and then their bodies were thrown in Rivers ans Canals in Punjab. Many were secretly burned in mass burning of bodies.secretly by police.This was the height of indecency. We know when Shaheed Jaswant Singh Ji Khalra came to Canada and gave detained information of Torture and Disappearances in Punjab. As soon as he returned to home,he was abducted by Gunda Police of KPS Gill and Beant Singh CM. They torture him, and murdered him.After the killing they threw the body in Bias River near Harike. Many more stories are there to be related but what is the use ?
Here one see people talking about  exhuming the all rotten body of Late M.Dalip Singh ,trying to bring the skull to Punjab.  What are they going to gain ?????
 Why can't they leave him where he is resting now !!!!!
