Every 12 years festival of "Nanda Devi Raj Jat" is celebrated at Hemkund for thousands of years.
However one fateful day in 850AD some 1200 years ago tragedy struck when pilgrimage of 600 pilgrims perished when they were stuck by cricket ball sized hailstones when they were gathered around Roopkund lake.
Skeletal remains of the pilgrims were preserved by very low temperatures for 1200 years complete with skin and hair. Pilgrims were not locals and were probably from Punjab, Rajasthan or Konkan area as they were much taller.
Even now some 30 kilometer away from Hemkund, in summer months hundreds of bodies can be seen floating in water. Immaculately preserved from vultures and decay due to cold weather.
Please read below and see how discovery was made and research done.………………………………………………………………………………………….

 Respected Sikh cyber Members,
so far as Sikhs are concerned, we have nothing to do with Hemkund, which seems to be mythical story propagated by the Hindu Devi-Devtas. In 6th Chapter of Bachiter Natak, it has been stated that before his birth, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib had been meditating on the Maha Kaal at a place, which he described as “Hemkunt Parvat adorned with seven peaks where earlier the king Panduraj (a character in the epic Mahabharata) had practised austerities.”
But this place was popularised by Bhai Vir Singh by writing Book: Sri Kalgidhar Chamatkar, starting with Hemkunt to Sach Khand. In 1936, modest 3-metre square shrine was built, which has now become a popular Tourist Spot. Truly speaking, Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708) during his life span, neither shared such information with the Sikhs, nor he had visited that place.
But it is good story for the Bhais, Raagis, Kathakaars as it generates good money for them. For the Sikhs, it has no significance.

 Dear Sikh cyber Members.
I have gon through the three links . given by S. Amandeep Singh , but there is not even a single time mention of  Hemkund .
How the learned person have related this place with Hemkund  ?  What is the purpose of floating this story at present  ?
From where the Sikhs came from  1200 years ago  ?

Please don,t  waste time on these  mythical stories , try to find an amicable solution of the present crisis.
