Thursday Briefing: An impeachment motion in South Korea Inbox The New York Times Unsubscribe Wed, Dec 4, 11:00 PM (7 hours ago) to me View in browser|nytimes.com Ad Morning Briefing: Asia Pacific Edition December 5, 2024 Author Headshot By Gaya Gupta Good morning. We’re covering an impeachment motion in South Korea and France’s prime minister failing a no-confidence vote. Plus, what’s your most cherished holiday tradition? Members of South Korea’s opposition parties protesting on the steps of the National Assembly in Seoul yesterday. Chang W. Lee/The New York Times South Korea’s president is facing an impeachment vote Members of South Korea’s political opposition yesterday moved to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol. The motion could be put to a vote as early as tomorrow, and comes after his declaration of martial law on Tuesday ended in spectacular failure. Several opposition parties filed the impeachment motion together. If the vote is successful, Yoon would be suspended from office and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo would become the interim president. Yoon’s fate would then go to the Constitutional Court, where the justices could uphold the impeachment and remove him from office, or reject it and reinstate him. Here’s how the process could unfold. Collateral damage: Yoon’s defense minister, chief of staff and other top aides had tendered their resignations, South Korean news media reported. Yoon will address the nation today, according to an official familiar with his plans. Context: Yoon’s surprise declaration of martial law on Tuesday was the first effort to impose military rule in more than four decades. The audacious move was an attempt to break a gridlock in government that has hobbled Yoon’s nearly three years in power. Several people in suits walk down a hallway carpeted in red. Prime Minister Michel Barnier of France, center, after the no-confidence vote yesterday. Sarah Meyssonnier/Reuters France’s prime minister lost a no-confidence vote French lawmakers passed a no-confidence measure against Prime Minister Michel Barnier and his cabinet yesterday, sending France into a fresh spasm of political turmoil. Barnier is expected to resign soon. France’s lower house of Parliament passed the measure with 331 votes — well above the required majority of 288 votes — after Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally joined the chamber’s leftist coalition. The move leaves France without a clear path to a new budget and threatens to further unsettle credit markets. It could also create a wider opening for the far right. What’s next: Barnier is likely to remain as a caretaker until President Emmanuel Macron names a new prime minister, but weeks of instability are on the horizon. Context: It was the first successful no-confidence vote in France in over 60 years, making Barnier’s three-month-old government the shortest-tenured in the history of France’s Fifth Republic. Haiyun Jiang for The New York Times Senators waver on Hegseth for defense secretary A small but pivotal group of Republican senators expressed concern yesterday about Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to be defense secretary. Hegseth has been accused of sexual assault, public drunkenness and mismanagement while running veterans’ nonprofits. “Some of these articles are very disturbing,” Senator Lindsey Graham, one of Trump’s closest allies in Congress, told reporters. “He obviously has a chance to defend himself here, but, you know, some of this stuff is going to be difficult.” Trump yesterday named a senior counselor for trade and manufacturing and a possible overseer of NASA. Here are his latest picks. What’s your most cherished holiday tradition? For many of us, the holidays are full of traditions. Which ones are you most looking forward to this year? Respected Dr. Kala Singh
Assistant Secretary, GSC
Thank you for your letter. I hope you are doing well. Though your letter is also addressed to some other persons but, as usual, I am going to reply only on my behalf.
I am utterly surprised to note that you mentioned your invitation but did not address any of my responses to your previous invitations, nor did you respond to my invitation for a fair and impartial discussion.
Mr. Secretary, we live in a time when judges, from lower courts to the Supreme Court, disassociate themselves from cases where they have even a remote connection to avoid conflicts of interest. If any of them fail to follow this protocol, the whole process is automatically considered vitiated in the interest of justice and fairness. In this case you are a one sided party to the your cause of discussion so assurances from your side, claiming impartiality, do not stand in this case of discussion on calendar.
What kind of organization are you that proceeds with discussions to judge its own cause, in its own court, under its own control, with its own judges and rules?
If your GSC project is truly initiated at the request of the Sikh Sangat, why have you concealed my responses from them? Have you ever informed the Sikh Sangat publicly about my repeated requests in response to your one-sided invitation formality? I request you to inform all of them publicly about my responses to your invitations.
In the meanwhile, I again humbly request that the discussion be held under neutral command so that it can take place without any suspicion. Participation in a fair, justified, impartial, and non-vitiated discussion is a basic right, and you should not deny this while remembering the dictum of your Guru Sahib: "Haq Paraya Nanaka Uss Sooar Uss Gaye."
I am ready for discussion so let us talk under the neutral and impartial control of the discussion on the calendar. Expecting a positive response.
Respectfully,
Hardev Singh

NOTE:- Copy of Letter received from Dr. Kala Singh, Assistant secretary of an organization named Global Sikh Council claiming to be authorized authority by whole Sikh Sangat of the world.
Respected Hardev Singh Jammu, Col. Surjit Singh Nishan, Anurag Singh, Gurcharan Singh Sekhon, and Gurcharanjit Singh Lamba Ji,
Gur Fateh,
I hope this message finds you all in good health and spirits.
On behalf of the GSC, our president, S. Amritpal Singh, has previously sent three letters to each of you, inviting you to attend the seminar. In those communications, he repeatedly assured you that the seminar will be conducted with the utmost fairness and impartiality. Despite these assurances, we understand that you still have concerns regarding the neutrality of the seminar and its management.
Please note that this seminar is a GSC project initiated at the request of the Sikh Sangat, with the aim of addressing and resolving the pertinent issues at hand. The GSC has to follow through with it as per the desires of the Global Sangat.
Once again, I extend a cordial invitation to you to participate in the seminar, with our firm assurance that it will be conducted impartially. Your presence is important to include all viewpoints at the seminar. However, the choice is yours. After the deadline of 14th July, the GSC will proceed with its plans and hold the discussion among all those who have responded.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Warm regards,
Dr. Kala Singh

For as long as I can remember, and for as long as I have been a member here, this group has debated tirelessly and with great conviction the issue of the Mool Nanakshahi Calender (MNC). Over the years we have seen the emergence of dedicated persons develop and share their expertise in making the case for the Sikh world to adopt the MNC.  At the same time we have also seen people who hold the opposing view articulate and present their case with passion.
What is clear is that (i) the issue remains unresolved, and will likely remain unresolved during the lifetimes of most of us here; and that (ii) the lead organizations of the Sikh Panth – the leadership of the SGPC, the AT, the other Takhats, and many other Sikh organizations have sold their souls to the devil to the extent that they either bury their head in the sand over critical Panthik issues (the MNC is one of them); or bend over backwards to appease the devil that is the master of their souls.
So why some members of this group get “excited” when a so called fake “Global Sikh Council” (GSC) comes along pretending to “want to RESOLVE” this issue through a process that is “utmost fair and impartial” and at the “request of the Sikh sangat” – is truly baffling.
It is baffling because not a single exco member of this fake GSC has ever contributed anything meaningful to the MNC debate that has raged on this forum for years. Not a single post of any worth and value. And suddenly they want to become the “guardians and saviours” of the MNC issue for the Sikh panth?
It is further baffling because not a single exco member of this fake GSC has displayed even one iota of expertise or basic knowledge on the MNC issue.  One is hard pressed to find even a single essay, let alone scholarly article on MNC that is written by the people who claim to represent this fake GSC.
The fake GSC letter says it wants to “address and RESOLVE the issue” of MNC.  What authority does this fake GSC have to “resolve”  an issue (MNC) that they know next to nothing about – other than having declared that they support the MNC? Where is the evidence of their ability to conduct an”utmost fair and impartial debate” or any other meaningful debate? Inviting other experts to sit in a Zoom session and lord over the session and control who speaks first and who goes next is not evidence of such an ability.
It is more baffling that so many true MNC / Calendar experts in this forum are falling over each other to support this fake GSC debate.  It is even more baffling that Hardev Singh Jammu has written FOUR letters over the issue of “fairness and impartiality” and continues to write knowing fully well that (i) he will get no reply, (ii) that the fake GSC is not impartial over the MNC issue and (iii) that the fake GSC’s agenda is no more than their self interest.
The most baffling thing I am left wondering over is why are the MNC experts (on both sides of the divide) at this forum so desperate to jump on the wagon of this fake GSC “initiative” given that the fake GSC has no authority to resolve it and no expertise to moderate even  an unfair and lop-sided debate.
Here is what is as clear as daylight and not the least baffling.  The fake GSC is looking for ways to make itself relevant. It is looking for ways to lay claim to its non-existent authority to “resolve” panthik matters.  It is looking for ways to pull wool over everyone’s eyes that it is a “global” institution of standing and repute.  It is looking for ways to be able to grift, and fill its coffers.
To do all the above, this fake GSC has jumped on the wagon of this forum, to tap into the experts that toil here, and to ride to fame on the shoulders of these experts. This is not their first attempt, and it will certainly not be their last.
To the experts I say this: You bring disrepute to your expertise if you get used by fraudsters to further their own agendas.
To the fraudsters I say this: Your fakery will not be transformed into gallantry by sitting as chairpersons amongst real experts. KSD.
