Sikh Political Prisoners ! Can Punjab Govt. Help ? ? ?
In the past few months, Punjab has witnessed a peaceful but active protest for freedom of Sikh Political Prisoners. A prominent figure, Bhai Gurbaksh Singh sincerely promised to protest till death until justice was delivered to the Sikh prisoners.
However, the Punjab Government manipulated his resolution with a hollow promise, pushing Gurbaksh Singh to break his fast without actually meeting his demands. Clearly, the Punjab Govt. is in a position to help release Sikh Political Prisoners, if it had the intention to.
Respected Punjab and Haryana High Court Advocate Navkiran Singh, states that, “life prisoners aren’t necessarily entitled to early release by law, but the State or Central Government can intervene at any time during the sentence and grant a pardon.
However, today’s Punjab Government is not concerned with the betterment of its citizens, but purely interested in holding on to its own power.”
Another case is that of Gurdeep Singh Khera (a Chardikala Sikh) who is currently lodged in Karnataka Prison where the State of Karnataka has sent paperwork to transfer him to a prison in Punjab but the Punjab Govt. has not actioned it. "Our very own Sikh Party and it’s leaders are not willing to come to the aid of our very own Sikh political prisoners”, Advocate Navkiran Singh says.
