Former Chief Minister and Congress candidate from Amritsar Capt Amarinder Singh today said a Fact-Finding Commission could be set up to find out the truth about Operation Bluestar and those responsible for it. Addressing his first press conference after being fielded from Amritsar, Amarinder alleged that the Akalis led by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and the BJP were as much responsible for the Operation Bluestar as the Congress.
“While the Operation Bluestar was carried out by the Congress Government, Badal and LK Advani were equally responsible as both had recommended it. Advani has mentioned it in his autobiography ‘My Country My Life’ how he led a protest march, seeking military action in Darbar Sahib. Badal sought military action during a secret meeting with the then Union Home Minister,” he said.

The Congress leader asked Badal and Advani whether they were prepared to apologise like Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had done. He also lashed out at SAD general secretary Harcharan Singh Bains for saying that Sonia had not apologised for the Operation Bluestar while pointing out that it was well recorded and anybody could verify it from news archives.
Replying to a query, Captain said, “Punjab needs to move ahead. But at the same time, Badal should respond to my charge that he had recommended military action in Darbar Sahib during his secret meeting with the then Union Home Minister PV Narsimha Rao on March 28, 1984.” He quoted from the government’s white paper about the secret meeting.
Amarinder has warned Revenue Minister Bikram Majithia against alleged arm-twisting and victimisation of Congress workers. “Enough is enough. Don’t be under any illusion that you will be in power forever,” he said. Replying to a question as what will be the issues in the ongoing elections, he said he would focus on lawlessness, drug addiction, intimidation of people and closure of industry and consequent problems.
The former Chief Minister alleged that the Akalis had pushed Punjab into a trap of drug addiction and had ruined almost an entire generation. To another question whether he expected booth-capturing during the elections, the Congress leader shot back, warning, “Don’t underestimate us that we will allow all that to happen.” He said booth-capturing may be possible in a seat where results were close, “but in Amritsar it is going to be a one-way affair and it will not be possible for the Akalis to resort to those tactics of intimidation.”
Amarinder also recalled his connection with Amritsar, saying his great grandfather contributed to setting up the historic Khalsa College while his grandfather established a school for girls in Kairon village. During Elections in India, such allegations and counter-allegations are highlighted by the Media as well as the contesting Candidates but after the elections, the winners start doing the same not only to suppress the minorities but also to make black/dirty money and disproportionate assets for the next generations ! This Formula has been very successful since 1952.
In so far as the subject matter is concerned, in his Book: “SIKH HISTORY – 7: Genocide of the Sikhs (1978-1984)” First Edition October 2011, Dr. Harjinder Singh Dilgeer wrote at page 178:
“Gurdev Singh refuses to sign orders to attack:
Before formally launching the attack the Army needed formal signatures from the D. C. of Amritsar; at that time Gurdev Singh was the D. C. and he refused to sign permission / orders to attack Darbar Sahib; as a result he was replaced by Ramesh Inder Singh (when Parkash Singh Badal became C. M. in 1997, he appointed as the Chief Secretary in his Government); Gurdev Singh was sent on leave (but even during this ‘holidays period’ he was to remain under strict surveillance of the Army); Ramesh Inder Singh immediately signed orders to attack.”
Perhaps, someone wishes to verify their closeness/relationship between PS Badal & Ramesh Inder Singh IAS ?
In another Book: “BLUE STAR OVER AMRITSAR: THE REAL STORY OF JUNE 1984” by Author HARMINDER KAUR, Introduction by Khushwant Singh, Edition 2006, it is stated at page 158:
25. “Amarinder Singh resigned from the primary membership of the Congress (I) as well as his Parliamentary seat on June 10 (1984) after the army action against the Golden Temple. He became Agriculture Minister in the Barnala Ministry formed on September 29, 1985 but resigned from this post too on May 1 following an armed commando operation on the Golden Temple Complex on April 30, 1986, It was ordered by Chief Minister Surjit Singh Barnala.”
26. “Simranjit Singh Mann resigned from IPS on June 24, 1984 following the army action against the Golden Temple Complex.”
When we look at the past (30) years Punjab History, complexity of all parties and the respective dealers/leaders, is visible but no Government has come forward to initiate action against the involved persons. Let us wait and watch whether Voters in Punjab and elsewhere understand adequately and exercise their vote for the right person.
