Thus Speaks Guru Nanak  
First Nanak’s gift to his followers is how to attain spiritual heights through reason; if they remain blind in ignorance, the Guru states that their fate will remain mortgaged to old money making techniques established in the name of religions.
The Guru credits the failure in obtaining spiritual heights and liberation to Maya slumber, which doesn’t allow the seekers to remain awake from the Maya influences.
Anything that contributes to indulgence in lust, anger, conceit, greed and attachment is Maya. Remaining awake from such Maya influences leads to detachment and freedom from the Maya bonds.  Living as a detached seeker is applauded in the Gurbani.
To define the detachment, the Guru advises his followers to live like guests here; in other words, the seeker is advised to live by deeming the Creator as the sole owner of everything
