AMRITSAR SAHIB (September 3, 2015)—Sikh groups namely Dal Khalsa, SAD (Amritsar) and Panch Pardhani have urged the appointed Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib Gaini Gurbachan Singh to direct the SGPC to install a portrait of Bhai Dilawar Singh Babbar in the Central Sikh Museum. In the light of Akal Takht bestowing the status of martyr on Bhai Dilawar Singh on March 23 2012, these organizations had made this demand on 20th martyrdom day of Bhai Dilawar Singh observed at Akal Takht Sahib.
Notably, Bhai Dilawar Singh blew himself up to kill former CM Beant “Singh” on 31st August 1995 within the premises of Punjab secretariat in Chandigarh.
Representatives of various groups paid homage to Bhai Dilawar Singh and eulogized his contribution and sacrifice to uphold the honour of Sikh Panth and restore Sikh human rights. Akhand Kirtani Jatha head Gaini Baldev Singh read out the message of life convict Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara-the co-accused of Bhai Dilawar Singh in the Beant assassination case.
Talking with the media, SGPC member Jathedar Kulbeer Singh Barapind and Dal Khalsa spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh said the decision to accord martyr status on Bhai Dilawar Singh in 2012 was historic and significant in many ways. They said in view of Bhai Dilawar Singh’s sacrifice to avenge the violations of human rights of Sikhs, his portrait should be installed along with other martyrs of the recent Sikh struggle. They said for some obvious reasons, the SGPC has cold shoulder this demand made by Panthik groups from last two years. They said the assassination of late CM Beant Singh was last resort to restore Sikh human rights as killings of Sikh youth was order of the day under Beant Singh’s illegal rule.
