HIGHLIGHTS:
1. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)’s 99th founders’ day on December 14, 2019, with a stronger call to liberate Akali Dal from the control of the Badals as and questioning the party’s role in the Akal Takht pardon to Sirsa-based Dera sect head Ram Rahim Singh, and series of sacrilege incidents. One by one, the traditional Akali leaders left the SAD’s sinking ship. The development is expected to have far-reaching consequences.
2. “Even as the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) led by the Badals are pulling out all stops to observe the party’s 99th founders’ day on December 14, 2019, its senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa has decided to commemorate the “day” with the party’s splinter faction — SAD (Taksali).
3. Notably, the said meeting was held on Saturday evening at the residence of former Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Ravi Inder Singh, who had in 2003 floated Shiromani Akali Dal (1920). Besides Dhindsa, Taksali Akali leaders Brahmpura, his son and former MLA Ravinder Singh Brahmpura, Sekhwan, SAD (Taksali) youth wing head Harsukhinder Singh Babbi Badal, All India Sikh Students’ Federation’s former president Karnail Singh Peer Mohamad, among others were present during the meeting.
4. The development assumes significance as the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), post sacrilege cases, has been trying hard to make its way back among the Sikh masses. Various panthic leaders and organizations have been raising their voice to free the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) from the “clutches of the Badals”. But with party’s senior leader lending its support to SAD’s splinter group on its foundation day;
5. The development is expected to have far-reaching consequences.
6. Dhindsa’s son Parminder Singh Dhindsa is SAD MLA and leading the party’s legislature wing in the Vidhan Sabha.
7. But the series of sacrilege incidents and the related firing incidents, coupled with SAD-administered apology to Dera Sacha Sauda chief, had hurt SAD’s image to a large extent, with its own leaders going against the party. Party’s resounding defeat in 2017 polls was also attributed to the same reasons.
8. SAD Taksali is also in talks with the two MLAs of the Lok Insaaf Party, who were earlier in Akali Dal. Besides, some rebel leaders from both the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are also in our contact,” a senior leader of the SAD Taksali told The Pioneer”.
