“During the 2002 Gujarat riots, a five-month pregnant Ms Bano, then 21, was gang-raped by a mob and
seven members of her family, including her 3-year-old daughter, were murdered in the communal flare-
up. The state government allowed the release of the 11 prisoners convicted for the crime despite a
notification by the ministry of home affairs in June that said rape convicts cannot be released under a
special release policy for convicted prisoners as part of the "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav" celebrations.
Reacting to the news, Ms Bano's husband Yakub Rasul said they were surprised after hearing about the
release of all the 11 convicts. Rasul said he, his wife and five sons, the eldest now aged 20, continue to
live without a fixed address, more than 20 years after the incident.
Given that the release comes close to the Gujarat Assembly elections, due by the end of the year in
which the BJP is aspiring for a sixth straight term in power, politicking over the matter has begun. The
Congress, AIMIM, RJD, CPI-M, TMC slammed the BJP government in Gujarat for the move. DECCAN

The release of the 11 prisoners- gang-rapists and murderers: Prime Minister's remarks have exposed the
huge gap between words and the spirit of justice:

·         Was the statement of our PM Modi not a glaring and open confession that women, half
population of India, are being maltreated, by casually using expletives and cuss-curse; used bad
language words which are abusive and against our women?
Was the statement of our PM Modi not a glaring and open confession, while ‘he addresses
India on 76th Independence Day’ that women, half of the population of India, are being
maltreated, by casually using expletives and cuss-curse; used bad language words which
are abusive and against our women?

·         My brothers and sisters, from this rampart of Red Fort, I also want to share an agony.

·         What I wish to share is that it hurts me to say that we have witnessed a perversion
in our day to day speaking, behaviour.

·         We have been casually using expletives (In general usage, an expletive is an exclamatory
word or expression, often one that's profane or obscene. In the book Expletive Deleted: A
Good Look at Bad Language (2005), Ruth Wajnryb points out that expletives are "frequently
uttered without addressing anyone specifically) and cuss-curse; used bad language words which are
abusive and against our women.

·         Can we not pledge to get rid of every behaviour, culture that humiliates and demeans women
in our daily life? Women’s pride is going to be a huge asset in fulfilling the dreams of the nation.

·         I see this power and therefore I am insistent on it. Extract From: PM Modi addresses India on 76th
Independence Day.
