From temperature-controlled shelters to special fuel and batteries – the Army has taken multiple measures to sustain hundreds of tanks and other mechanised vehicles during the fourth winter of their deployment in eastern Ladakh where the mercury plunges several notches below freezing point, top officials in the government have told The Indian Express.
Ever since the start of the standoff along the Line of Actual Control following the Chinese incursions in May 2020, the Army has deployed over 400 or nearly three brigades of Russian-origin T-72 and T-90 tanks and BMPs in eastern Ladakh. Agnipath Scheme: Agniveers’ Training As Security Guards For BJP Or Military On Contract Without Battle Fighting Spirit Or What? “Punjab Assembly to bring resolutions against Agnipath scheme, ban on Sidhu Moosewala song: Bhagwant Mann also announced that another resolution condemning the ban on Sidhu Moosewala’s controversial new song, SYL, on YouTube would also be brought in the House. A resolution condemning the centralisation of Panjab University would also be brought in the House, added Mann.
Leader of Opposition and Congress politician Partap Singh Bajwa demanded the resolution against the Agnipath scheme and Mann seconded it even as BJP member Ashwani Sharma opposed it. Protests by aspirants erupted in se veral parts of the country after the central government announced the Agnipath scheme earlier this month.
Bajwa said 20 per cent of Punjab’s youths were recruited by the defence forces in the past, then it was made population-based and 7.8 per cent of recruitment was being done from the state. With the Agnipath scheme, it would come down to 2.3 per cent, he pointed out. ”We should bring a joint resolution to oppose it,” said Bajwa.
“Earlier also the Centre brought farm laws and the stakeholders were not consulted. We need to protect the rights of our youth. The Punjab Regiment is the oldest regiment in India and the Sikh Regiment is the most decorated. We have been at the forefront whenever the country needed us,” he added.
Mann, while seconding the resolution, said that it was an emotional issue. “When I think that a 17-year-old would get recruited and come back at 21, he would not even be married, he would not be able to write an ex-soldier against his name, and would not get CSD benefits, I am against this law.”
Not only should the Punjab Vidhan Sabha bring this resolution but also all state assemblies across the country should follow suit, he said. “This is not only about Agnipath. Whenever in other countries, a law is formed, sweets are distributed. During the Zero Hour discussion of ongoing budget session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday, CM Bhagwant Mann promised to bring an all-party resolution against the Agnipath scheme.
The demand to do so was made by Congress Legislature Party leader Partap Bajwa. BJP MLA Ashwani Sharma opposed the move.

Amid opposition by the BJP MLAs, the Punjab Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution recommending to the state government that it urge the Centre to immediately roll back the Agnipath scheme.
While moving the resolution against the scheme, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said it is a matter of national security, youth and patriotism.
The CM said it is impractical that those undergoing training would study at the same time. He asked the BJP “not to mislead” the people. He wanted to know about the status of an Agniveer who dies while fighting on the front or on duty.
The CM taunted the BJP leaders saying if they thought the scheme was good they should send their wards as Agniveers and then depute them as security guards outside their offices.
The resolution reads, “The unilateral announcement of the Agnipath scheme by the Centre has witnessed widespread reactions in all states, including Punjab. The Punjab Vidhan Sabha strongly feels that the scheme where the youth will be employed only for a period of four years and only upto 25% will be retained, is in the best interests neither of national security nor of the youth. The policy is likely to create dissatisfaction among the youth who wish to serve the armed forces for life.
“It must be highlighted that more than one lakh soldiers from Punjab serve in the armed forces and many of them give the supreme sacrifice of their life on the borders of the country every year. The youth of Punjab consider serving in the armed forces as a matter of pride and honour and are renowned for their valour. The scheme has crushed the dreams of many youths of Punjab who have been aspiring to join the armed forces as regular soldiers. The scheme also has the propensity to weaken the long-standing esprit de corps of the armed forces.
