·         “The tunnel did not have an emergency exit and was built through a geological fault, a member of a panel of experts investigating the disaster has told Reuters.

·         The Char Dham project has faced criticism from environmental experts and some work was halted after hundreds of houses were damaged by subsidence along the route.

·         The government has said it employed environmentally sound techniques to make geologically unstable stretches safer. It also ordered the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to audit 29 tunnels being built across India. Writing by YP Rajesh; Editing by Angus MacSwan, Jon Boyle and Alex Richardson

Tunnel expert says ‘I feel good’ about rescue efforts: Arnold Dix, an international tunnelling expert who is helping with the rescue, expressed optimism about attempts to save the men after weeks of effort.

“I just feel good. The drilling on top of the mountain is coming along perfectly in the tunnel. It’s coming along very well. I have never said ‘I feel good’ before,” he told reporters.

What began as a rescue mission expected to take a few days has turned into weeks, and officials have been hesitant to give a timeline for when it might be completed.

Most of the trapped workers are labourers from across the country. Many of their families have travelled to the location, where they have camped out for days to get updates.   (10:00 GMT)

“I am completely relieved and happy as 41 trapped labourers in the Silkyara tunnel collapse have been successfully rescued,”  “This was a well-coordinated effort by multiple agencies marking one of the most significant rescue operations in recent years.” Minister of Road Transport Nitin Gadkari said15:16 GMT): https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2023/11/28/india-tunnel-rescue-live-news-41-trapped-in-uttarakhand-state-for-weeks

India workers could face PTSD from ordeal: Doctor

“The labourers trapped for 17 days will need long-term support including monitoring for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

For some, the mental impact of their ordeal could last for many months, said Dr Dinakaran D of the state-run National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences.

“All 41 would experience some post-traumatic symptoms like insomnia, recurrent bad dreams, recurrent reliving of the tunnel collapse, anxiety,” he said. “Not everyone will have the disorder but most will suffer from these symptoms for say, three to six months.”

The men have been in constant touch with rescuers through wireless devices and have 2km of space within the tunnel to walk around in, wash and rest. They were also sent antidepressants through the small pipe. The men have been getting food, water, light, oxygen and medicine through the narrow pipe.

While they waited day after day to be rescued, the men were encouraged to talk to each other, tell stories, do yoga, light exercise and play board games sent in. But Dinakaran said they would have to be checked at regular intervals for at least a year. “There may be enduring changes in one’s personality.”: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2023/11/28/india-tunnel-rescue-live-news-41-trapped-in-uttarakhand-state-for-weeks

“No one critical: Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami after 41 labourers rescued from tunnel

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday said none of the 41 labourers rescued from an under-construction road tunnel in Uttarkashi district was in a critical condition.

“All of them were healthy. They crawled out of the passage rather than being carried on stretchers,” Mr. Dhami told reporters soon after the evacuation of the labourers from the Silkyara tunnel.

He said the labourers, who were trapped in the tunnel for almost 17 days after a portion of the structure collapsed due to a landslide on November 12, will be kept under medical observation, before being sent home.

The agency they are working for and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) have been asked to allow them to go home for 15-20 days, the chief minister added”. NOVEMBER 29, 2023 01:59:  – PTI: THE HINDU
