Kasganj Violence: Body of Non-government Person Can’t be Wrapped in Tricolour, Says UP Govt

Lucknow, Feb 15: The Yogi Adityanath government on Wednesday said that the body of a non-government person cannot be wrapped in the Tricolour. Wrapping bodies of non-government persons, the Uttar Pradesh government said, violates the Indian National Flag Code, 2002.
The government's remarks came a few days after pictures of Kasganj violence victim Chandan Gupta body, wrapped in the Tricolour, went viral on social media.
Section V of the Flag Code of India says, "The flag shall not be used as a drapery in any form whatsoever except in State/Military/Central Paramilitary Forces funerals herein after provided.
The flag shall not be used as a drapery in any form whatsoever, including private funerals.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on Wednesday, also wrote to the Vidhan Parishad saying flag of any organisation cannot be put over or above the Indian flag.
The Uttar Pradesh chief minister is believed to have referred to the Kasganj violence ahead of which VHP and Bajrang Dal men had reportedly carried saffron coloured flags along with the Tricolour during the 'tiranga yatra' on Republic Day.
The development came a day after SP legislator Shashank Yadav raised queries regarding violation of Flag Code. "The CM s response proves that the code was violated in Kasganj. His killing was unfortunate. But he wasn t a government official, so his body shouldn t have been wrapped in the national flag," Yadav was quoted as saying by Times of India.
Director General of Police (DGP) OP Singh on Wednesday said there was no riot but the violence in Kasganj in January was only a "group clash"..
"Tensions do arise due to group clashes in some districts but, overall, Uttar Pradesh has been a riot-free state in the past one year. There was tension in Kasganj due to group clash but it was effectively checked. We contained its spread," he said.
