Justice Bobde panel gives clean chit to CJI in sexual harassment probe

The three-member panel headed by Justice S.A. Bobde finds ‘no substance’ in sexual harassment allegations against Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. The report will be kept confidential.
The Justice S.A. Bobde-led in-house inquiry panel examining the sexual harassment allegations against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Monday gave the top judge a clean chit.
A short statement issued by the Supreme Court on its website on Monday said the committee, also comprising Justices Indira Banerjee and Indu Malhotra, found “no substance” in the allegations levelled by a former apex court employee against the CJI.
The former employee had submitted her complaint against the CJI in an affidavit form to 22 Supreme Court judges on April 19.
The statement said the report has been handed over to the “next senior judge competent to received the report” — this would be Justice Arun Mishra. A copy of the report has also been handed over to the Chief Justice.
Citing a reported decision of 2003 titled ‘Indira Jaising versus Supreme Court of India and Another, the statement said as per this judgment, in-house inquiry committee report should be kept confidential.
The woman had “walked out” of the “informal proceedings” into her allegations after she was denied permission to be accompanied by a lawyer of her choosing or a support person
The committee had proceeded ex-parte and even the CJI was examined by the panel.
