“The notion that alcohol enhances social interactions is one of the most long-standing and widespread beliefs concerning alcohol’s effects.
Alcohol has been held to ease feelings of social discomfort, promote feelings of intimacy, and enhance perceived outcomes during social interaction. "Without wine there is no love," wrote Euripides in the fourth century B.C.,
A sentiment to which George Jean Nathan added a sly twentieth-century twist: "I drink to make other people more interesting." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4153408/

On average, your liver takes an hour to break down one unit of alcohol. This can depend on:
your weight; your gender; your age; how quickly your body turns food into energy; how much food you’ve eaten; the strength and type of alcohol; any medicine you’re taking;  Weight
Liver: When you drink alcohol, your liver oxidises 95 per cent of it. This means your liver converts alcohol into water and carbon monoxide. Your liver can only oxidise one unit of alcohol an hour.
Drinking with an empty or full stomach: If you drink alcohol with an empty stomach, the alcohol passes directly into your bloodstream. If you’ve eaten before drinking, the rate of alcohol absorption slows down but doesn’t stop.
As the concentration of alcohol in your bloodstream increases, your behaviour and body functions change. At first, you may feel happy and less inhibited, but after several drinks you'll probably:slur your words; have blurred vision; lose your coordination.
There is no immediate way to sober up. It takes time for your body to process alcohol. The morning after a heavy night’s drinking, you are likely to have a high concentration of alcohol in your bloodstream.
You may not be sober or safe to drive a vehicle. The legal alcohol limit for driving measures the amount of alcohol in your breath, blood or urine.
Kidneys: Alcohol is a diuretic and increases urine production. When you drink alcohol, you need to urinate more often. This causes thirst and dehydration.
Lungs: When alcohol is fizzy, you can inhale this. From your lungs, alcohol goes quickly into your bloodstream.
Types of drink: Alcohol mixed with water or fruit juice is absorbed more slowly. Alcohol mixed with fizzy drinks or mixers is absorbed more quickly”. https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/what-happens-when-you-drink-alcohol

Originally answered: are akali's the real reason for drug menace in Punjab?
May be I’m wrong but one cannot put whole blame on system only, for the drug issue in Punjab. my answer would be offensive to some people. https://www.quora.com/Are-akalis-the-real-reason-for-drug-menace-in-Punjab
There are many reasons and first one is people of Punjab.
Punjabis, who are drowned themselves in culture of 'Showing Off'.In this drinking alchohal is considered is so cool especially in Jatts of Punjab ( if u don't drink you're not a real one ,or people say “ Tere T***ya ch zor heni( u don't hav balls to drink alchohal, believe me this is the dialogue of 70% guys ) i mean seriously ,being a jatt is just a way to spoil urself in stupid things.
2.Punjabi music:- Yes, you read it right. Just go to YouTube and listen to some Punjabi song. 90% songs would be based on alchohol and some other drugs and youth follows this shit of their favorite singers. Aren’t they have spoiled the society totally.Innocent youth following then unknowingly. Another reason of drugs
3- The money minded Culture:
Today's Punjabi culture is hollow from the inside. People show off their big houses , luxury Cars and property. Children from such families like to follow the trend and they just devaluing hard work like agricultural work. This culture is the root cause of the Drug menace.Cuz most people from such families get addicted to drug easily by people and some of them ate drug dealers himself.
4- Government makes money off addiction: Alcohol is a huge source of Punjab government’s revenues. Like the Tamil Nadu government, they have become experts at selling alcohol [as a Tamil dialogue goes: Utopia is where the government provides education and the private sector sells alcohol. Dystopia is where the government masters in selling alcohol and private masters in selling education]. Why would the government fight addiction when they have money to profit? At some point alcohol addiction turns into drug addiction and the government officers benefit from that too [some police officers double up as drug lords].
Some other factors:-
1. The agricultural boom that sustained Punjab's economy after the Green Revolution has exhausted groundwater reserves and rendered many farms polluted due to chemical pesticides.this boom resulted in so many farmers becoming so rich that they lost the incentive to work. They eventually fell prey to alcoholism and drugs.
2. Shiromani Akali Dal is responsible for creating a goonda-raj similar to UP.
The Chief Minister's son usurps land from small land owners and has dealings with drug runners and is involved in dacoity. Here's a story a person told me.
·         CM's son wanted to purchase a plot of land belonging to a local shopkeeper. The shopkeeper did not want to let go of his sole source of income and hence refused to sell the land.
·         Infuriated, the CM's son and his vandals dig a trench around the shop. With street access cut off, business fell and the shopkeeper had no choice but to sell his shop to the only available buyer for a pittance.
4. Pakistan, sensing lawlessness has resorted to a new form of cross-border meddling. Knowing that armed confrontation is futile, they are now smuggling opium across the border, destroying the youth of Punjab who once were well known for their bravery in the military. The worst affected areas are in the region around Amritsar.
5. The Sikh community, known everywhere in India as one of the most hardworking and successful communities in India has become the laziest in Punjab with most youth being jobless and addicted to opium”.
