Why the armed forces need to steer clear of politics: By: Harinder Baweja:TIMESOFINDIA.COMUpdated: Mar 31, 2024, 18:27 IST IST: TOI

“I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established and that I will, as in duty bound, honestly and faithfully serve in the regular Army of the Union of India and go wherever ordered by land, sea or air, and that I will observe and obey all commands of the President of the Union of India and the commands of any officer set over me even to the peril of my life.”
These are important words — in both letter and spirit — inculcated into every soldier the day he or she joins the defence services, be they from the Indian Air Force, the Navy or the Army. The oath binds each soldier to the President and the Constitution. The allegiance does not — and cannot — extend beyond the contours of the Constitution”.TOI
