Talking to Sikh24 correspondent today, hesaid, “In 1983, I migrated to the US after retirement from the services. But, I kept visiting India time to time. During one of my visit, I quested to know more about my grandfather’s battle feats as a soldier in World War I and the idea of a book came in my mind. I started my research in 2004 and have come up with the book titled “Sikh Warriors in World Wars”.
The book gives a brief account of Sikh warriors and generals starting from the creation of first Sikh cavalry by Guru Gobind Singh. The book features accounts of Baba Banda Singh Bahadar, Sardar Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, Maharaja Ranjit Singh and later gives an account of the Sikh soldiers fighting in the West Asia and Mesopotamian front during the World Wars.
He said, “Sikh soldiers fought at the most conflicted fronts like modern Iraq and Belgium. They traveled in the desert carrying Guru Granth Sahib and were able to capture significant cities. The book is a dedication to all brave hearts, who over the years, have managed to bring glory to the community,” he said.
“I wrote to the respective governments of the countries and received all data regarding the World Wars, including a special reply from the ex-Prime Minister of England, Tony Blair. I was given access to all the information regarding my grandfather, who had fought in British army in WWI. Thereon, other stories followed,” he informs.
He said further that Satwant Singh, founder president of Punjab Heritage of Chicago, would release his book at Virsa Vihar in city over the weekend.
