“India is the home of the world’s biggest producer of Covid vaccines. But it’s facing a major internal shortage: PUBLISHED WED, MAY 5 20214:01 AM EDTUPDATED WED, MAY 5 20215:25 AM EDT: https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/05/why-covid-vaccine-producer-india-faces-major-shortage-of-doses.html

 1.     The sharp rise in infections seen in India since February has been attributed to;

(i)                The allowing of a large religious festival and election rallies;
(ii)             As well as the spread of a more infectious variant of the virus;
(iii)           Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his governing Bharatiya Janata Party have been criticized for a lack of caution and preparedness;
(iv)           And accused of putting politics and campaigning above public safety
(v)              A war of words over the government’s vaccination strategy has also ensued.
2.     Ruling lawmakers have been criticized for allowing millions of doses to be exported earlier in the year.
(i)                Only 30 million people have had the complete two doses of a Covid vaccine in India so far, government data shows:
(ii)             That’s a small number (just over 2%%) of India’s total population of 1.3 billion people — although around a quarter of that total are under 15 years old and, as such, are not eligible for a vaccine yet”. CNBC
3.     The harsh truth behind India’s grand Covid vaccination claim: The immunisation mission is marked by four features of failure: https://indianexpress.com/article/opinion/columns/covid-19-second-wave-india-vaccination-drive-7303483/
(i)                Poor coverage;
(ii)             Mismatch between targets and availability;
(iii)           Geographical disparities in coverage; “Conclusion: The striking geographical patterns, for example between predominantly urban and rural areas, may reflect spatial differences in provider compliance or coverage, and can partly be explained by socio-economic and cultural differences...” International Journal for Equity in Health
(iv)           And bleak prospects for the future.
