CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The Special Investigation Team constituted by the Punjab government to crack sacrilege and Police firing cases today questioned the former Punjab CM Parkash Badal at his MLA flat in sector-4 of Chandigarh.
Initially, SIT member IG Kuver Vijay Partap Singh reached at Parkash Badal’s residence to question him but the former CM refused to appear before the IG in the absence of SIT head ADGP Prabodh Kumar. Later, the ADGP Prabodh Kumar also reached to Parkash Badal’s residence and the SIT grilled him for about 40 minutes.
Interacting with media after appearing before the SIT, Parkash Badal said that he has answered all the questions posed to him by the SIT members. “Neither I nor the then DGP (Sumedh Saini) ordered police firing on the peacefully protesting Sikhs” he said.
Accusing the SIT of working at the behest of Captain Amarinder Singh, Badal said that Captain had announced to put him behind bars but he doesn’t fear even if Captain succeeds in his “motive”.
Badal further said that the SIT questioned him about the sacrilege incidents occurred in Punjab during his tenure and he clarified it to the SIT that why would they intensify the punishment for sacrilege culprits if they were part of the conspiracy behind sacrilege episode. He added that the holy corpuses of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji are installed in their trio houses so how could they indulge in committing such a sin.
“I think they were fully satisfied with my replies. But the result will be known after they give their report. That I know (what will come in the report).
They want to turn us from witness to accused,” Badal said, adding that the report will be “what chief minister Amarinder Singh wants.”
It may be recalled here that the SIT was set up by the Captain Amarinder Singh led Punjab government in September this year to probe sacrilege cases and the police firing ordered on those protesting the sacrilege cases in October 2015 when the Akali Dal-BJP alliance government headed by Parkash Badal was in power in the state.
