1984 Sikh Genocide: Supreme Court Orders Govt To Produce 199 Files Cases

NEW DELHI, India—A Supreme Court’s bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra ordered the union government of India to produce files of 199 cases closed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) pertaining to the 1984 Sikh genocide. The Attorney General Mukul Rohtagi has been directed to produce files of cases before the court within three weeks.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted in February-2015 to re-probe the serious cases of 1984 Sikh genocide. Initially, the SIT’s tenure was fixed six months but later the tenure was extended for more than two years through multiple steps. Closing a total of 199 cases picked for review, the SIT had chosen only 59 cases for further investigation.
Sikh24 has learnt that the SIT had only filed four charge sheets in court, pertaining to the genocide. 
DSGMC member S. Gurlad Singh Kahlon had moved a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court against the slow working of the SIT to bring genocide culprits to justice. Acting on the litigation, the Apex Court had directed the government to appoint a supervisory committee on the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that can overlook the working of SIT. The Court had also sought suggestion from petitioner Kahlon to avail speedy justice to the genocide victims.
