AMRITSAR SAHIB (June 27, 2014)—The four-member investigation panel that was formed by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to probe the clash held between the SGPC task force and Sikh youths, has submitted its report and recommended clemency for those arrested in the case on condition of apology.
SGPC general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, who is also a member of the panel, said they carefully observed the video footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the Sri Darbar Sahib Complex, private video footage, and photographs. Besides, they also recorded the statements of the duty staff and the concerned SGPC officials.
He said that the panel examined the evidence very carefully. “After we examined the evidence it seemed that some people didn’t care at all about the maryada of Sri Akal Takht Sahib during the violent clash on June 6. These people were again and again fighting with the Granthi Singhs and the staff on duty. They were even seen trying to get into the restricted area where Sri Guru Granth Sahib was sit and where only staff is allowed,” he said.
“SGPC task force didn’t resort to any action intentionally and the incident occurred when the programme was over. Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh and SGPC Chief Avtar Singh Makkar had already left the venue,” he said.
On the other hand, he pointed out some shortcomings in the management which, he said, would be prevented at a later stage.
To prevent recurrence of such unfortunate incidents in the future, the probe panel would discuss with the SGPC president and decide future plans in this regard.
However, those arrested in the case have expressed regret for the incident. In all, 22 persons were held in connection with the clash.
“They’ve stated that they will accept whatever religious punishment is awarded to them by Shri Akal Takht Sahib. We have received a copy of this letter from Shri Akal Takht Sahib,” he said.
He said a serious discussion was held. Keeping in view the wider interests of the Sikh Panth, clemency had been recommended for these youths. SGPC would be asked to begin the process to withdraw the case against them once Shri Akal Takht Sahib initiated action against them as per maryada.
